In our modern day world of intense living, the whole complexion of our homes has changed. No longer is the kitchen mainly a place to prepare and serve meals. It has become a gathering place for family and friends and has been made readily adaptable for entertaining business associates. Traditional boxy cabinets have been replaced with furniture-looking pieces. Decorator items that used to be found in the confines of the living room now grace the walls and shelves of the kitchen. Computers are a common component of this 'hub-of-living' as families adapt to a new way of organizing busy schedules, on-line shopping, or accessing recipes and school reports.
Bathrooms have become bigger than bedrooms used to be. "Function" has evolved into 'luxurious retreats' or 'romantic hideaways' as those caught up in the frenzy-of-life struggle to reclaim their own 'space'.
While becoming a sanctuary to the working millions, the home still represents the 'center-of-life's-activities' for the more domestically inclined. But there is one thing they all have in common . . . everyone wants the task of creating and maintaining a home to be as painless as possible. Consumers want products that are long-term and low maintenance; that give choices, not challenges; that allow creativity and individualtiy without compromising the budget. New to the Northwest market is a dynamic product that throws those doors wide open. On the leading edge of convenient, carefree, innovative products is solid surface. Solid surfaces, such as Corian, Wilsonart, Avonite, Gibraltar, Fountainhead, as we have known it in the past, are manufactured in sheet goods of restricted sizes, and are limited to a pre-determined color selection. Different depths and effects are created by stacking and gluing several layers together. Seaming is required to get shapes and sizes beyond the standard sheet sizes.
Now, there is a whole new world in solid surface manufacturing. And it's being created right here locally. I use the word 'created' in its finest form. Unlike the others, this product combines the personal color and design choices of the consumer, with the expertise and manufacturing process of the company, to create a "uniquely yours" result.
Color selection covers the spectrum. You may choose plain-Jane neutrals to wild reds or primary-colors-confetti. Stone chips of various sizes, shapes, colors, and textures may be added. If you prefer the veined 'marble' look, you can choose the background shade as well as the veining hue.
Incorporating special colors and designs to match existing decor is easily attainable. It's your choice. Instead of using sheet goods that are shipped in, Applaus Creative Solid Surface custom designs and manufactures the product locally. The countertop and bullnose front, for instance, is done all at the same time, rather than the old stack and glue process. Numerous lip-edge designs are available.
Integral sinks are a much sought-after item. The countertop flows smoothly into the basin, leaving no overhanging lip to hide the gathering places of bacteria. Style, color, and design are consumer's choice.
Solid Surface is non-porous (which means it's virtually stain and germ free) which allows families to really use it. It's beauty is enhanced by daily use (which produces a greater luster and satin finish), unlike others which scratch, stain, and mar. Accidental 'cuts' can be easily removed with fine sandpaper and a green Scotch Brite pad, eliminating the need for costly repairs.
It's uses are seemingly endless . . . countertops, desk tops, tables, tub surrounds, fireplace mantels, to name a few. In our damp Northwest, it provides a durable surface for windowsills. Because of the unique manufacturing process, "custom showers" has been redefined. No longer is the consumer restricted to the size if pre-manufactured shower bases. Any size, any shape, any color, and drain position is in the realm of possibility.
Tama King, busy executive and mother of five is adamant in her support of the product. "When I get home from a whirlwind day at the office, I don't want to spend my time cleaning and scrubbing. Solid Surface countertops, showers, and tub surrounds have made a huge difference to me. I love the look, the sleek satiny feel, and the ease of keeping it looking better than new with minimal effort. And, best of all, it is practically kid-proof!"
Solid Surface is static-free, which makes it ideal for that computer center we spoke of earlier.
The cost? Very competitive. This new process will enable people, who thought Solid Surface was out of their price range, to think again. It's a very affordable option to laminates and the pricier namebrands that have dominated the market until this newcomer came on the scene.
